The Rt Rev John Francis Welsh, DD was Bishop of Trinidad and Tobago from 1904 until his death in1916.〔The Times, Monday, Jul 24, 1916; pg. 11; Issue 41227; col E ''Obituaries Two Colonial Bishops''〕
He was born in Huddersfield in 1856 and educated at Christ Church, Oxford.〔“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 After graduation he was ordained in 1882〔(In which year he married )〕 and began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at St James, Whitehaven.〔(Church details )〕 From 1883 until 1886 he was a Lecturer at St Bees’ Theological College〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, John Phillips, 1900〕 and from then (until his elevation to the Episcopate) Principal of Warminster Missionary College.
